Ibiza’s wind environment differs from Mallorca’s in character. While the Tramuntana can affect the north of the island, the dominant wind events are the Poniente (hot, dry westerly) and, in coastal zones, the Gregal (north-easterly). The Poniente in particular is associated with rapid onset and high sustained speeds — it can arrive in minutes and sustain 40–70 km/h for hours.
The consequence for shade structures is clear: a system that requires human intervention to retract will frequently be caught deployed in full Poniente conditions.
