PRIVATE LUXURY DESIGNER VILLA · IBIZA · BALEARIC ISLANDS

Cantilever Sails, Free-Floating Above an Ibiza Pool.

A designer rental villa on the island’s quiet coast. Free-floating SunSquare cantilever sails span the pool on long-cable rigging — engineered to shade without enclosure, to extend the deck without ever touching it.

AN EDITORIAL CASE STUDY

Some sites ask for shade. This one asked for nothing in the way.

The pool is the centrepiece. The garden steps down to the sea. The brief was clear: no posts in the deck, no structure overhead — sails that float free, on cables that read as line, not architecture.

An Ibiza Designer Villa, Shaded Without Compromise.

Set into a quiet hillside above the sea, the villa was conceived as a pavilion — open, low-slung, and composed entirely around its pool. The shade brief was uncompromising: no in-deck masts, no enclosed canopy, no compromise to the panorama. SunSquare cantilever sails on long-cable rigging satisfied the design as the architect drew it — shade as gesture, not structure.

01 — The Place

Ibiza’s quiet coast — the side without the bars or the boutiques. Pine forest stepping down to the sea, a small private gate, and a designer villa whose front door is a sliding wall of glass. The property is rented by the season to a tight roster of clients who want privacy more than service. The shade had to be invisible when not in use, and theatrical when deployed. The system needed to be fully self-operating, typical for this type of high class rental property.

Ibiza is renowned for its extraordinary Mediterranean light, a luminous clarity that bathes the whitewashed villages and turquoise waters in a vivid, almost ethereal glow, especially during the golden hours.
In summer, however, this intense sunlight demands constant shade, as temperatures soar and the UV index climbs dangerously high, making shaded terraces essential for comfortable island living.

02 — The Architecture

One single cantilever pole set into dry-stone walls beyond the pool deck carry the sail on long-cable rigging — V4A marine-grade stainless steel masts, anchored deep into the geology of the hillside. No vertical structure touches the deck. No mast interrupts the pool surface. The sail reach the geometry from the side, like booms over open water. Soltis 92 fabric. Cantilever arm calibrated to Beaufort 5-6 — automatic retract under higher wind load.

03 — Daily Life

From morning at the pool to dinner on the terrace, the sails follow the sun — repositionable along their rigging in under a minute, retracted in seconds when the breeze shifts. The choreography is daily, and the gesture is always unobtrusive. The pool remains the centrepiece, even when the sails are out of sight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — Son Vida deploys eight independent SunSquare sails on a unified V4A steel mast network. Each sail is tensioned and adjusted separately, following the topography of the site. The shared-mast geometry uses roughly half the structural footprint of a one-mast-per-sail solution.

Each sail mast carries an adjustable arm fitting that repositions the sail’s anchor point by up to 35°. The mechanism is reached from the terrace, requires no tools, and takes under a minute per sail. It allows the shade to follow the sun through the day — low and tight at breakfast, full extension at midday, retracted for sunset.

The structure is rated Beaufort 8+ (74 km/h sustained). All hardware is V4A marine-grade stainless steel — the same grade used in offshore yacht fittings — with a 25-year service life and an annual cleaning requirement. The Soltis 92 membrane is 8% wind-porous by design, preventing the canopy from acting as a sail itself.
