Canyamel sits on Mallorca’s east coast, on the southern flank of Cala Mesquida bay — a stretch of unbuilt limestone where the cliffs drop straight into open Mediterranean. The villa occupies the upper terrace of that face, its infinity pool cantilevered above the rock. The brief: shade across the pool deck and the lounge.

The sail is carried from the limestone wall behind the pool and three posts — all V4A marine-grade stainless, giving shade and protection to the pool are. No post on the pool. No deck penetration. Soltis 92 across 64 m² of coverage, motorised retraction below Beaufort 5, every fitting V4A and dimensioned for many many years of salt exposure off Cala Mesquida.

This private seaside house in Capdepera, Mallorca (2016) by Esteva i Esteva Architects. The style is Mediterranean minimalism — whitewashed volumes with clean, geometric forms rooted in Mallorcan vernacular tradition. Thick walls, flat or low-pitched rooflines, and a restrained material palette of stone, lime render, and timber define the architecture. Perched dramatically at the cliff’s edge, the house sits high above the rocks, with the raw Mallorcan coastline as its defining backdrop.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can V4A stainless steel really survive this close to the sea?
Yes — V4A (1.4571) is the marine-grade stainless specified for offshore and salt-spray applications. Every fitting on the Canyamel installation, including the dual-pulley sheaves and the triple-pulley mast cap, is V4A. The hardware does not corrode and typically does not require coating maintenance.
How does the motorised retraction handle a sudden strong gusts of wind??
An anemometer mounted at the mast cap reads wind speed continuously. When it crosses Beaufort 4-5 (40-50 km/h) — the system retracts the sail automatically in under 45 seconds, without owner intervention. Manual control is by wall switch or RF remote. Owners can also pre-empt: if the forecast calls for stormy weather, one button retracts everything before they leave for dinner.
