Some hotels add shade. This one printed it onto the brand.
Bikini Hotels sits on the edge of Es Trenc — Mallorca’s most protected natural beach, and one of the few hotels with breakfast service directly on the sand. The brief was full-coverage shade across pool, terrace and bar without disturbing the palm grove that frames the property, and engineered to keep operating through the wind seasons that close most outdoor terraces by October.
“The brief asked for shade in a 70/80s vintage look. The result printed the brand onto the architecture.”
01 — The Site
Es Trenc is the longest stretch of unbuilt coastline on Mallorca’s south side — a protected natural beach with the open Mediterranean to one side and a hotel terrace stepping straight onto the sand on the other. The site faces full afternoon sun from May to October, and the Migjorn wind picks up in the late summer. Two constraints framed the project: no new structural foundations could be cut into the protected ground, and the existing palm grove had to remain untouched.
Es Trenc unfolds as a pristine ribbon of powdery white sand and shimmering turquoise waters, cradled by its precious dune landscape—rolling hills of golden sand and resilient wild vegetation that form a rare, protected sanctuary. Here, the gentle Mediterranean caresses this untouched paradise, offering a timeless haven of natural beauty that soothes the soul and stirs deep reverence for one of Mallorca’s most treasured coastal gems.
02 — The Engineering
The system uses SunSquare’s SQK geometry on powder-coated V4A marine-grade stainless steel masts, dimensioned for Beaufort 5-6 exposure. Each sail is motorised and auto-retracts when wind sensors register the threshold. The bi-coloured Soltis 92 membrane was custom-made with Bikini Hotels’ branding — the total system forms an integrated part of the architecture, not a graphic applied after the fact. Where conventional installations would have required new concrete bases, the anchoring runs through V4A pulleys and shackles where possible onto the existing palm trees, with structural loads independently verified.
03 — The Service Hours
The operational change is the part the architects never see: full breakfast, lunch and dinner service every day of the season — even on the September days that used to close the terrace by 13:00. The sails deploy from the operator’s panel in under thirty seconds; in storm conditions the wind sensors retract them automatically. Three full Mediterranean wind seasons have now passed without a single intervention to the structural hardware.

The orange-stripe Soltis sails over the restaurant terrace — service runs from breakfast to evening without a single closure to the season.
The complete seating layout sheltered by the custom Soltis canopy, with Es Trenc beach immediately beyond.
The sail’s tensioning cable wraps directly onto a palm tree trunk — minimal new concrete bases, structural loads independently verified.
V4A stainless steel pulleys radiate from a single mast head, cables fanning out into the surrounding palm grove — the engineering that made minimal new foundations possible.

Triple-motor mast head — three sails sharing a single V4A stainless steel column, the geometry that reduced structural footprint by two-thirds.
Stainless steel pulley and chain hardware framed by palms — every component traceable to its mast.
Twin orange-stripe sails meeting above the beachfront terrace — engineered to clear the palm grove and frame the open Mediterranean.
Sails above the thatched parasols — two shading systems layered for service in the heaviest sun.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can sails really anchor into existing palm trees without damaging them?
At Bikini Hotels Es Trenc, the entire system anchors through V4A stainless steel pulleys and shackles onto the existing palm grove, with structural loads independently verified. No drilling into the trunk, no impact on the tree’s growth. Three full Mediterranean wind seasons have now passed without a single intervention to the anchoring.
Can the sail membrane carry custom branding?
Yes. The Soltis 92 membrane is fully printable in our atelier in Campos. For Bikini Hotels we developed a custom orange stripe with their wordmark — the printing is durable through commercial UV exposure and salt-air weather. Each membrane is replaceable on its own if the brand identity evolves.
How does the system hold up through the Mallorca wind season?
The cantilever masts are V4A marine-grade stainless steel dimensioned for Beaufort 8+ (74 km/h+). Wind sensors trigger automatic retraction below the structural threshold. At Bikini Hotels the installation has now weathered three full wind seasons including the September Migjorn gusts that close most beachfront terraces by October.
