PRIVATE SEAFRONT VILLA · PORTO COLOM · MALLORCA
A Sail Architecture Above Portopetro Bay.
A SunSquare automated sun sail system over a private seafront villa in Portopetro — V4A marine-grade stainless steel masts dimensioned for Beaufort 5-6 Mediterranean exposure, shading the pool terrace and gardens above the open bay.
EDITORIAL · 01
The seafront stays unbuilt. The villa is its private edge.
Portopetro is one of Mallorca’s last natural harbours — a quiet inlet on the southeast coast where the seafront has resisted overbuilding. The villa occupies the private outer edge of that coastline, with the open Mediterranean to the south and the working fishing harbour to the north. The brief: shade across pool, terraces and gardens, without breaking a single sight line to the open water.

Engineered for the Coast, Built for the View.
The architecture is built around a single line: from the upper terraces down to the pool deck and out to the open bay. The SunSquare system follows that line — shade above every terrace level, with the sight line to the water preserved unbroken. V4A marine-grade steel for every component, engineered for the wind seasons that move down the coast every autumn.
01 — The Place
The site sits on the protected outer edge of Portopetro harbour, between the cliffs and the open Mediterranean. The Tramuntana arrives down this coast every autumn — 60+ km/h gusts that close most outdoor terraces by October. The owners wanted to use the pool deck and dining terrace through every season. The brief started there.

02 — The Architecture
The system uses SunSquare’s unique geometry on V4A marine-grade stainless steel masts. The sail anchors through 4 columns, with arms tensioned to clear the view and improve coverage. Soltis 86 membrane: structural integrity through Beaufort 5-6 conditions, motorised retraction above the threshold.
03 — Daily Life
The owners use every terrace, every season. Morning swims under the pool-deck sail, lunch on the dining terrace, evenings in the lounge with the canopy retracted to catch the last light off the bay. Wind sensors trigger automatic retraction when the Tramuntana picks up.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a single installation cover multiple terrace levels?
Yes — Son Vida deploys eight independent SunSquare sails on a unified V4A steel mast network. Each sail is tensioned and adjusted separately, following the topography of the site. The shared-mast geometry uses roughly half the structural footprint of a one-mast-per-sail solution.
How does the height-adjustable arm work?
Each sail mast carries an adjustable arm fitting that repositions the sail’s anchor point by up to 35°. The mechanism is reached from the terrace, requires no tools, and takes under a minute per sail. It allows the shade to follow the sun through the day — low and tight at breakfast, full extension at midday, retracted for sunset.
Will the system survive Mallorca's worst weather?
The structure is rated Beaufort 8+ (74 km/h sustained). All hardware is V4A marine-grade stainless steel — the same grade used in offshore yacht fittings — with a 25-year service life and an annual cleaning requirement. The Soltis 92 membrane is 8% wind-porous by design, preventing the canopy from acting as a sail itself.
